Take It Easy On The Noob

There's a So You Think You Can Dance newbie, tinkcrzy1972, doing recaps for tvgrapevine.com, but he/she does a good job, here.

The show actually kind of reminds me of what might happen if you put Dancing with the Stars in the blender with American Idol, and poured the results in a glass. I was hoping this would be a way to get my dancing fix over the summer, but it remains to be seen if I'll be able to find enough content.

Oh, I'm pretty sure you'll be blown away by the content before the season is over. Anybody who watched last season knows that.

Where On Planet New York?

First up was Dancing Derrick...What I didn’t know was that he would be recreating the final dancing demon scene from Buffy’s “Once More With Feeling” number. He was seconds away from burning a hole in the floor and singing about bunnies!

New York Audition Show

Ok, we've seen the first audition show. Fortunately, there were no injuries or face plants as in previous seasons, though the re-appearance of Dave “Sex” Soller could be considered unfortunate. Who knew someone who calls himself Sex would have an over-protective mother. I agree with Mother Sex about one thing though. Sex should never be compared to Peewee Herman. Instead, he should be compared to Tiny Tim.

I thought Dancing Derrick overplayed his bid for William Hung-style fame.

Pasha and Anya were great and deserved to move on to Las Vegas.

Heather Zampier is the girl with the hip injury and the 12-going-on-13, tattoos. She was smooth, with amazing balance. My only question is, did it hurt to watch her, knowing what she had been through?

Let's hope the girl who teaches kids break dancing cleans up her mouth around her students.

Hannah-Lee Sakakibara had fallen through a floor in Israel, but stood strong in New York and moved on to Las Vegas after passing choreography.

"Wild and big and crazy" Jamal made it through too, but not his buddy E-knock. Jamal was fun to watch, but I don't see him getting through the Las Vegas round. I think E-knock showed more versatility and potential for growth. He was fun to watch too.

Stanislav's sister Faina danced beautifully and will be one to watch.

On to LA for next Wednesday's 2-hour show.

Idol's Done, Let The Dancing Begin

No big surprise that Jordin won Idol, especially after my fave Melinda was eliminated, at the same point in the season that last year's best singer, Elliott Yamin, was eliminated. Apparently, that's where America's taste ends.

The finale was good television. Any show that features Smokey Robinson and Gladys Knight is cool with me. I really enjoyed the Ruben/Jordin duet, and can see that being released as a single. Why they made poor Ruben sing Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, I'll never know, but The African Children's Choir more than made up for that.

This piece in the Fayetteville Observer makes a crack about snarky British judges. I guess Nigel Lythgoe can be a bit snarky at times, but he has a much wider range of expression than Simon Cowell, dresses better, and is usually much more constructive in his criticism. Of the 2, I'll gladly take Nigel.

Fans of last year's winner, Benji Schwimmer, and runner-up, Travis Wall, will like a couple of this year's choices: Schwimmer's sister and Wall's brother, "both exceptionally good dancers," Lythgoe says.

SYTYCD Host Cat Deeley admits she is a terrible dance (one think I have in common with her) and much more, here.

"America is a very important part of the show," Cat continues. "They make the decision at the end of the day. Last year, we had two great dancers. We had TRAVIS [WALL], who was a great technical dancer with a great personality. Then we had BENJI [SCHWIMMER], who was a great dancer but with an incredible personality. Personality won out."

We may know the name of So You Think You Can Dance's first season 3 finalist. This story in the Reporter-Times of Morgan County Indiana says 21 year old Matt Blevins of Morgantown, has advanced from the Chicago auditions.

On why SYTYCD hasn't gotten the ratings of American Idol:

“Not everyone can dance, but everyone thinks they can sing,” he said. “Sometimes the average person can’t judge if someone is a good dancer — technical ability does come into it. It’s much more demanding.”

I remember as a little girl going to see a Broadway show with my dad every summer. I remember the electricity in the audience before the curtain rose. I remember the men and women that pranced into the theatre dressed in the finest garb, dripping in diamonds, furs, and anything else they could showcase on the way to their sacred red velvet seats. It was a big deal to be there. I remember watching in amazement and feeling the powerful wave of magic that poured from the lips of the stage directly through the viewers and right into my young, open, hungry heart.
The voices, the movement, the story, the experience marinated in my every pore for hours, days, perhaps even weeks after, which in turn kept me inspired and more on fire to achieve my dreams for the rest of the year until I came back to the Big Apple next summer. Sigh… (smile) More...

Cat Deeley: No Major Changes for Season 3

So You Think You Can Dance Host Cat Deeley, says season 3 will be bigger and better, but there won't be any major changes to the format.

"The talent that we have seen this time is just amazing. The bar has been raised even higher, because now people understand the show, they understand the concept, and they understand what we are looking for. So the dance moves have got to be even more impressive. The personalities have got to be even bigger. There is even more at stake. I think that people understand that now and they know what the show is so it's back, but bigger and better."

"I do think that the major thing is personality. Somebody who America is just going to fall in love with. When you say to me... What are they really looking for? It's almost like you don't know quite what it is until it walks on that stage and you go, 'I don't know how to define this person, but they have that star quality.' You can see it almost for the minute they walk on the stage, and then if they perform and their performance just blows you away as well, wow, that's a killer combination. That's what we're looking for. We're looking for a performance that can blow you away and we're looking for star quality."

Cat Controversy in UK

So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley is hosting re-broadcasts of American Idol season 5 in the UK. She is getting very mixed reviews on at least one forum. To be fair, most who complain are more critical of her role, than of Cat herself. Seems they have to pad the shows there because of far fewer commercials.
