So You Think You Can Dance News Roundup

Brandon Bryant, with partner Candace Rodriguez, won the Young Dancer category of Star Search in 2003. Videos of their performances are here in the third column to the right. You'll need RealPlayer. Thanks to the folks at TWOP.

One disillusioned viewer recounts her niece's experience auditioning for season 4. Gray at Fame Or Famine picks up the thread.

Sarah Kickler Kelber at the Baltimore Sun:

I wasn't totally blown away by the first three episodes, which focused on the auditions. I couldn't believe how many repeat bad auditioners there were. Did we really need to see "Sex" again? Why let him back for a third try? He's been sighted on Idol and Make Me a Supermodel, so clearly he's just trying to get on TV. If only producers would stop cooperating! And Gold Inferno again? Come on!

I'm pretty sure I spotted Limbert Capelin in her video from the DC auditions. He made it deep into the Las Vegas auditions last year.

The Fayetteville Observer gives us some background on the Hart brothers, Anthony and Antwain.

When So You Think You Can Dance Canada airs this fall, it will follow the Wednesday/Thursday schedule we're familiar with.

So You Think You Can Dance News Update

It seems my cable provider is allowing me access to the internet, at least for the moment. Lots of stuff to catch up on, and we have 4 hours of new programming over the next 2 nights. Buckle up!

Kelly points us to Robert Muraine's website. Lots of great videos, but she warns that the resume page may contain a spoiler regarding his top 20 status.

Richard Rushfield at the LA Times:

"Dance" is part of an almost spiritual mission to raise the profile of dance in American culture, to raise the prospects for professional dancers and to make dance an accepted and prized part of daily life.

Lacey Schwimmer says she "will be dancing on the mtv movie awards june 1st... for adam sandler."

She's been a friend to BSYTYCD since way back, so we're happy to learn that Rambling Gypsy will be covering So You Think You Can Dance this season.

Our favorite crazy French-Canadian ballroom choreographer, Jean Marc Généreux, wants French speaking Canadian dancers to feel welcome on SYTYCD Canada:
"I want to be a judge because the judge has a very important task - to shape the show," Généreux said.

"Our decisions will influence the quality of the dancers. Being a guy from Quebec and a francophone, I think it's very important to add this (Quebec) texture to the show. I want to make sure every single demographic feels welcome," he continued.

Généreux hopes his presence will help more Quebecers come out of the woodwork and showcase their talent on the show.

In another article, he says
"We're looking for intelligence, talent and honesty," Généreux said Tuesday. "The most talented dancer may not win. The most intelligent dancer will win."

Grab an empty cup and chat with Kev & Kim. What? Cat Deeley isn't French?

Smarm site Defamer goes out of its way to be a buzzkill for Jack Chambers.

Our friend Buffmetube makes up for it by celebrating Australia's Favorite Dancer.

TV Dance News

BuddyTV has the So You Think You Can Dance early season schedule. We'll know the top 20 on June 5th.

Big congrats to choreographer Dave Scott. He was just named winner of the 2007-08 Fred & Adele Astaire Award for Best Choreography in Film for his work in the Step up 2: The Streets.

Tyce Diorio will be one of the judges on Master Of Dance, TLC's entry in the dance reality genre.

Shimmy interviews Ivan Koumaev.

Tamara Brooks at Zap2It recaps Step It Up & Dance. Welcome back Oscar.

This interview with Step It Up's Miguel Zarate adds some depth to what we know about him. Well, except for the part where he wants to be the next male Madonna.

The Pasadena Star-News catches up with ABDC finalists Kaba Modern.

I was unaware of this America's Best Dance Crew drama at the time:

The theory goes that, because a Kaba-Jabba finale would have resulted in a hip-hop dance showdown featuring almost exclusively Asian faces, dial-in totals were given a, uh, "Florida tweak" to provide Boston's Status Quo crew with a protected berth for the final round.

I wouldn't put it past MTV to tweak the totals, but if you buy into the identity-politics voting theory, isn't it very possible that Kaba-Jabba split the Asian vote?

Our friend Selly remembers Dr. Jimmy Slyde.

The CTV website is doing an outstanding job covering all the events leading to the first season of So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

So You Think You Can Dance Canada's guest judge Melissa Williams talks about dance on television:

"I started my career on a television show like this one," she says, thrilled to be judging Halifax hopefuls. "I'm so excited to be working with a dance television show again."

After a formidable career in LA, Williams is back in her hometown of Windsor and excited that So You Think You Can Dance has finally come to Canada. "It's great that dance is back in people's living rooms. Canadians need to be reminded of the talent that's in this country." Williams is one of SYTYCDC's Alternating Third Judges, and is one of the judges for the Halifax auditions.

Australia's Dancing With The Stars was turned down by none other than British Chef and TV personality Gordon Ramsay. This article says that SYTYCDAus choreographer Jason Gilkison may be a judge on the show. The UK has it's own version of SYTYCD in the works. I'm pretty sure it can't be a British show until Gordon Ramsay shows up to give everyone a good bollocking.

News Roundup UPDATED

One of our favorite SYTYCD recappers, Adam B. Vary at EW, reports from the Idol Gives Back taping. He spotted:

"Benji, Danny, Travis, Nick, Donyelle, Heidi, Hok, Lacey, Pasha, Dmitry, Lauren — and that's all I could make out; there was at least a dozen more."

If you don't mind some spoilage, read his full report here. I actually have some concerns about the way the SYTYCDers were presented, but I'll wait and talk about that after the show.

CORRECTION: The CBS show Secret Talent of the Stars premieres tonight, not Thursday, as we previously told you. Jason Samuels Smith is featured teaching a tap routine to singer Mya. Thanks to Divine Rhythm Productions for the correction.
UPDATE: Here's a preview video.

Very surprising news here. The producers of Step It Up & Dance have moved their flagship show, Project Runway, from Bravo to Lifetime. Bravo parent company NBC is suing. It's too soon to tell if this will have any effect on Step It Up. Another surprise in the article is that we will get 2 more seasons of PR before the end of the year, one on Bravo and one on Lifetime.

Watch for Step It Up & Dance classes at your local Crunch Fitness Center. Bravo and Crunch have partnered to launch a customized fitness program that "will follow the dance styles featured in each week's episode."

Here are a couple more recaps of Step It Up. Beckylooo thinks it sucks the chrome off a tailpipe, Dancer in DC can take it or leave it, and it wouldn't be a Bravo reality show without a couple of gay guys dishing, would it? I say give it a chance, people.

Sabra Johnson and Kameron Bink are currently in Australia teaching workshops. I fully expected that we would see them on the finale of So You Think You Can Dance Australia. Think again, says the Courier Mail.

So You Think You Can Dance Canada has begun auditions in Vancouver.

SYTYCD Canada News

So You Think You Can Dance Canada Executive Producer Sandra Faire talks about the upcoming CTV first season:

When the show airs in the fall, Faire expects the Canadian audience will be treated to a wide range of dance styles reflecting our cultural mix -- some East Indian, Celtic and aboriginal dancing, for example -- and perhaps a bit more ballet than has been seen on the U.S. program.

Some classical training, or an aptitude for that discipline, is in the essential nature of the competition on "So You Think You Can Dance Canada." Judges will be looking for candidates who can work with a choreographer on new genres and disciplines of dance, those who can work with a partner, and candidates who are able to grow during the season.

MORE

There's still no word on who will be host and judges, though at least one dancer/choreographer/blogger has thrown his hat in the ring.

In the first bit of news we've heard since it was originally announced, we learn that So You Think You Can Dance Canada is set to debut at the end of the 2007/2008 season. Maybe one of our Canadian readers will correct me, but I believe that means sometime in the spring. It was also announced that Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann, which will debut after the first of the year on ABC in the US, will also air on CTV.
