SYTYCD News Roundup

Leee wonders if So You Think You Can Dance is really a family show.

Besides scaring the bejeebus out of Cat last week, Gev Manoukian spent some time talking to the Ice Network. Thanks to a reader for the tip.

I received an email from someone inquiring about Cedric Gardner and suggesting him as a dance guest. I don't know if that's going to happen, but it looks like he's in the sunshine of LA, teaching for Debbie Allen.

The first season of So You Think You Can Dance Australia is holding up well in comparison to season 4 here in the states. The Aus top 10 kicked off their tour Saturday in Brisbane. Here's the finale:

Joshua Allen has a Debbie Allen connection too.

Here's a video and some pics related to Courtney Galiano's job as a Knicks City Dancer.

Jessica King's Dad traveled to LA with her. She's been dancing for 20 of her 23 years.

Gev Manoukian plans to open a dance studio after getting his business degree.

Whoa! Cedric and Faina need better PR.

It's cellphone quality video, but the moves are nice.

SYTYCD News Roundup

Benji Schwimmer appeared at “Dance Rocks,” a benefit for Career Transition for Dancers on Monday night in New York. Jennifer Dunning of the New York Times had good things to say:

“Dance Rocks” was essentially a series of lookalike tight-bodied duets and syncopated group loping, with a little aimless street dance, acrobatics, cheerleading moves and juggling thrown in. One speaker mentioned the prevalence of dance reality shows on television today and their effect on developing dance audiences. (Next stop, “Giselle.”) And one of the better acts on the program was “Get Up Offa That Thing,” performed by Benji Schwimmer, the 2006 winner of one of those shows, Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” and Heidi Groskreutz, another finalist. If you’re going to strut it all out, it pays to know how.

I finally found a little more info on choreographer Mandy Moore, best known to SYTYCD fans for Neil and Sabra's Table Jazz:
Mandy has worked with some of the top choreographers in the business, and has performed all over the world from Brazil to Australia. She was a featured dancer in "Austin Powers III" and "A Time For Dancing" as well as for the television shows: "That 70's Show," "Malcolm In the Middle," and "The Drew Carey Show."

Cedric In A Ballroom

That phrase might strike fear in your heart, but don't worry. He's doing his own thing, at Mary Murphy's ballroom studio in San Diego. It WAS for a halloween showcase though.

Catching Up With Cedric

GMToday recently talked to Cedric Gardner:

His most memorable moments on "So You Think You Can Dance" were working with top choreographers in the industry, celebrating judge Nigel Lythgoe’s birthday and going to the "Hairspray" premiere. "But the show itself was a lot more stressful because you have to throw like 2 million people in the mix that are watching you every week. And all of their opinions, so that makes it a lot harder," he says.

What Am I Missing?

Can anyone tell me what the heck Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield is talking about?

Like any other reali-talent show, So You Think You Can Dance makes you identify with your favorite contestant — gawky Cedric! Sassy Pasha! Lusty Lauren! Lacey, the hustle queen! Hok, the Japanese break dancer! It even hints at budding romances between the dancers, in the classic, shameless Ice Castles tradition. But they blend into a big chorus line of eager-to-please dementia. This show really reminds you how dancers are different from other showbiz types. The singers who show up seem calm and well adjusted by comparison. Yes, even Hilary Duff. (Hillz! Way to dodge those seminal bullets from the Good Charlotte guy who fertilized Nicole Richie!) All the dancers are this close to a breakdown, and they get jumpier every week.

Good News About Cedric

Gene at Monsters Of HipHop writes to tell us that it's just been booked and confirmed. Cedric Gardner will appear at their Orlando Tour Finale this weekend. More details at their site. Also, this from their MonsterBuzz blog:

Toy company Wild Planet has also called on Cedric, giving him a 2 week opportunity to come work with their San Francisco based outfit, learning all the ins & outs of the toy industry as well as sharing his ideas on new toys.

With this and the Chuy story earlier today, it's gratifying to see good things happening to good people.

Web Roundup

TVGuide has interviews with Cedric and Shauna.

TVGasm's Krank Mills wrote an entertaining recap of last weeks results show. Hmmm, does Krank remind you of anyone we know?

Something For Nothing has a couple of videos from Lacey's past. I think we've posted them here, but they're worth seeing again.

A reader points us to this video from Neil's past.

Checking out that one, we found this one, Neil and his brother Jeff. These, kids, are the wages of fame.

Shauna Fan Video Re-released

We blogged this Shauna Noland fan video before she was eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance. You may have gotten the dreaded "This video is no longer available" message when you tried to watch it. That's because the creator, Youtube user moltanlavafalls took it down. It has been re-edited and re-released. Also appearing are Jimmy Arguello, Cedric Gardner, and Kory Amaral, music by Bjork, Outkast, and Clockhammer.

More Shauna & Cedric

Daemon's TV got a chance to interview Shauna & Cedric.

Shauna:

D: Did you think you were going to go home this week?
S: I don’t know, I mean I never really try to hold things for
granted or anything.

D: Do you wish you had done something different in your routine?
S: No, I mean I feel like things happen for a reason, and I think that I tried everything I could, and that I made everything my all, not once did I hold back.

D: What has this experience brought you?
S: This experience has been amazing. Working with all the choreographers, and giving me a chance to share what I love to do with everyone was great.

Cedric:
D: Where do you get your inspirations for your moves?
C: Cartoons. If you ask anybody, especially if you ask Danny, because Danny’s my roommate, he’s like “man, dude all you watch is cartoons or the history channel” it’s because, I like reality but sometimes you know, you just want to get away from it so either you go in the past like with history or you look at cartoons, that’s how I look at it. So yeah, I get a lot of my inspiration from cartoons.

Cedric & Shauna Interviews

BuddyTV gets first access each week to the departing contestants. The Cedric interview is up and available in text and audio.

Q. What made you want to try out for the show, were you a fan beforehand?

A. I loved the show, what made me try out for the show, actually was Ivan, like watching Ivan last year. I was just awed by the way he moved, just like, man it was just cool that he was like a hip-hop person who was actually from the Monsters of Hip/Hop, which I'm from, and that he made it so far. That was one reason, the other reason was just the study, just study as many different dance styles without, I know it sounds bad, but without paying for them. Because it can be really expensive to pay for dance everyday, all day long.

Shauna's interview:
Q. What was the experience for you like dancing with Cedric?

A. It was great, I really love Cedric and I think he's an amazing person as well as an amazing dancer. At times it would get stressful just because of him not really having that experience, but it was fun. I'm really glad I got to work with him. We would stay up really late and just work on it and talk to each other, and I think we really helped each other, it was fun.

Product Placement

EW's Adam B. Vary thinks Hairspray didn't get plugged enough. He also says:

...the only solo I truly liked was Hok's, since he bothered to dance to the music rather than freestyle shapeless, showy movement for 30 seconds. But as Nigel made clear, the solos only played a part — a small part, by the looks of it — in the judges' decision to cut Shauner and Cedric. It's not like we didn't see this coming, exactly, given the breadth and supreme quality of Anyer and Jaimie's performances over the full season thus far. (Not to mention their luck in landing partners who raise their dancing game and lower their propensity to blurt out giggly inanities. Respectively.)

Top 14 Elimination Show Recaps

Brett Love at TVSquad:

Ya see, here's my problem with this explanation. Remember way, way back a whole 2 weeks ago? According to the judges, Jesús was given the boot because he was outdanced in the solos. The solos were the thing, right? But not now. Now it's all about the season as a whole. The hell? The thing is, even looking at the season as a whole, I'd still put Shauna ahead of Anya. Lack of growth? Really?

Spill recaps the show:
We’re saying goodbye to two more dancers tonight, and hopefully one of them is Cedric — talented soloist, mediocre partner. But first, tonight’s group dance. It’s set to You Can’t Stop the Beat from Hairspray, as part of the whole marketing push that landed Adam Shankman on the show as a judge. But — but — they used this song for a dance last year! Repeats are lame! Plus, this Queen Latifah version is definitely not as good as the other one they used. The choreography isn’t that special, either. Thumbs down for Shankman. Where’s Tyce Diorio when you need him? Also, I love how they put Danny in the front of all the group routines. He probably won’t win, but he’s totally the best. Cat’s continuing her weak attire streak in a frilly powder-blue sixties dress and tightly pulled-back hair. We conclude by watching some rehearsal footage of Adam Shankman acting like a crazy person. Sigh, theater people. He’s got some killer splits though.

Cedric's Best Solo

Shauna Remixed

YouTube user moltanlavafalls has posted a compilation video of season 3 finalist Shauna Noland. Also appearing are Cedric Gardner, Jimmy Arguello, and Kory Amaral. Unfortunately, there are some lyrics some might find offensive, otherwise, it's well done.
