SYTYCD Update
LA Times blogger Stephanie Lysaght paints a picture of a real lovefest at last night's elimination show.
Rachel Howard, the dance correspondent for San Francisco Chronicle, analyzes each routine for The Voice Of Dance. For instance:
--Kourtni Lind and Matt Dorame in contemporary.
Choreography, 9. Performance, 7.
Hallelujah for Sonya Tayeh’s choreography, proving that “contemporary” is not synonymous with flailing melodrama set to Celine Dion. Her piece was hip, richly textured and smart, and it made Kourtni L. and Matt look their best. Nigel is ridiculous to say the public won’t understand it. The real problem is the weird brother-sister chemistry between Kourtni and Matt—and the fact that their personalities aren’t flowering. Adam’s advice to Matt to let loose and dance into the floor more is right on. Lose the ninja mask, too, and maybe he and Kourtni could have more spark. Prediction: bottom three.

In his Uncle Orson Reviews Everything column, novelist Orson Scott Card is still upset about the elimination of Marquis Cunningham:
Marquis Cunningham was one of the two most skilled dancers in the show this year – and the other one, Debbie Allen's protégé, is the judges' pet. Since Cunningham is far more likeable than Will Wingfield, it seems as if the judges might have, consciously or un-, taken the opportunity to get rid of him so that he couldn't, through some fluke, spoil their plan of having Will Wingfield as the sole contemporary dancer in the finals.
Yet Marquis is everything they claimed to be looking for. How do you get rid of someone like that?

At Truth Vs The Machine, Jeff Kouba stands up for So You Think You Can Dance and challenges one of those standard put-down articles from the disapproving elite.
Was Marquis eliminated to keep Comfort in the running longer? GMMR presents an interesting theory:
Let me explain. I think Susie deserved to go home. She wasn’t at all impressive this week during the performance round - especially since she was dancing in her own genre. (Oh and I’ve hated her since her first audition) But Marquis has been impressive since the very beginning, and in my opinion he has shown us a lot more than Chris has to date. But here’s the deal - Marquis and Comfort aren’t a good match. Pairing the two together could be disastrous, and the judges don’t want to risk losing Comfort…yet. Comfort is good for the competition and more importantly good for the show. She brings a certain accessibility that some of the other dancers can’t. The show needs hip hop dancers because I think Producers believe that the genre appeals more to the masses. And let’s not forget that there’s a a good story that comes along with an untrained, non-professional street dancer taking on other genres. It’s the same reason they have all their chips on Twitch this season (even thought I personally think that’s a damn good bet).

Buckle up before you read the next sentence. Fox Reality Channel is casting a reality show for reality show cast-offs to compete for their own reality show. You can't make this stuff up. Who would you nominate from the SYTYCD family? I'm thinking Ricky Palomino.

Susie & Marquis' Smooth Waltz (Video)
It's hard not to compare this routine to Jessi & Pasha's nearly perfect top 20 Smooth Waltz, but hey, Pasha is the master of partnering and Marquis is 18 and not a ballroom dancer. Susie's salsa background shows in the first 10 seconds, but otherwise there's plenty of pretty going on.

Tonya Plank:
My second favorite of the night was Susie and Marquis’s Waltz. Breathtaking! But Nigel, yes, we noticed the second lift problem! We’re not blind! First lift was gorgeous though. Lovely fish dive! You can tell Marquis has ballet background, which translates very well into Standard Ballroom where you need an elegant carriage, a straight upper body, and good lyrical quality. Susie really surprised me. Her Salsa is fun but not tremendously precise, which is fine since Salsa is a social dance and doesn’t require precision and clarity. But her Waltz was another story entirely. She had wonderful control and beautiful lines. So far a couple of my favorite dancers.

Leee runs down the season 4 So You Think You Can Dance top 20 as only Leee can.
Dave Chung shares his early picks.
Marquis Cunningham is a triple threat.
The Utah connection: is it because of opportunity and clean living, or because there's nothing better to do than dance and sing?
